![]() The dump site consisted of a large number of mounds in an irregular pattern. Nuclear Disposal Area 1 was established on the far side of the moon, and was used until 1994 when it was closed. In addition to being Earth's space control center and space research area, it would also serve as the guardian of the nuclear waste that would be dumped there. With the establishment of a permanent Moonbase, Alpha served a dual function. In the series, due to Earth's reliance on nuclear power, atomic waste had accumulated to such a degree that it had become a major environmental problem. Nuclear Disposal Area 1 and Navigation Beacon Delta The presence of these launch pads explains the occasional references to launch pads 6 to 10, despite there being only five launch pads around the main base. These buildings are built into a lunar hill, and have their own cross-shaped launch pad. There are peripheral research outposts situated some distance from Moonbase Alpha in order to conduct hazardous experiments. In the episode Black Sun, the towers are enhanced to provide defense screens used in many subsequent episodes, notably The Last Enemy. These are also seen around other structures outside the main base such as Nuclear Disposal Area 2 as well as off site research facilities. There are eight anti-gravity towers surrounding Moonbase Alpha used to stabilize gravity inside the structures. Access to Eagles is through the end door which opens into the boarding tube on the launch pad. ![]() Access to and from corridors is via double side doors on the sides of the pod. Travel tubes provide rapid transit between sections of the base and to the launch pads via a cylindrical travel pod which contains four or six seats depending on the tube being used. ![]() These launch pads are circular but have descending cross-platforms that lower the Eagles into underground hangars for storage and maintenance. There are five launch pads visible around the base which have extending/retracting boarding tubes via the reception building for access to the Eagles and visiting spaceships. Note the Travel Tube top right of screen accessing the rest of the Moonbase One of Moonbase Alpha's Eagles preparing for lift-off from a Launch Pad. Power is generated through nuclear reactors and the accumulation of solar energy. Moonbase Alpha is totally self-sustaining. Construction began on February 3, 1983, but was briefly halted during the 1987 thermonuclear war. Originally, the base was designed to serve as both a deep space exploration station and a monitoring station for the nuclear waste areas on the Moon's far side. Located in the Moon crater Plato and constructed out of quarried rock and ores, Moonbase Alpha is 4 kilometers in diameter and extends up to 1 kilometer in areas below the lunar surface.
